Common questions
What is Ashtakoot Guna Milan?
Ashtakoot ("eight-fold") Guna Milan is the classical Vedic kundli matching method based on each person's Janma Nakshatra (moon nakshatra) and Janma Rashi (moon sign). It computes 8 categories of compatibility — Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakut, and Nadi — that add up to a maximum of 36 points. It's the same method used across India by traditional astrologers.
What's a "good" total score?
Classical guidance: below 18 is generally considered low compatibility. 18-24 is acceptable. 25-32 is good. 33-36 is excellent. But the headline number isn't the whole story — Bhakut (worth 7 points) and Nadi (worth 8) carry more weight than Varna (1). A 28/36 with both heavy kutas full is much stronger than a 30/36 that's failing Bhakut and Nadi.
What is Nadi Dosha and why is it serious?
Nadi compares the body-constitution group of both nakshatras — Aadi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta), or Antya (Kapha). When both partners share the same nadi, classical texts flag it as a health/genetic concern (Nadi Dosha = 0 points out of 8). It's the heaviest single kuta. Modern Vedic practice often considers Nadi Dosha automatically cancelled when both share the same moon sign or rashi-lord — a real consultation can verify if cancellations apply to your charts.
What if our birth times are unknown?
Ashtakoot uses moon sign and moon nakshatra, both of which depend on the moon's position. Moon moves about 13° per day, so without an exact birth time we use 12:00 noon. If either of you was born close to a sign or nakshatra boundary, the result can flip. For high-stakes matching, get the exact time from a birth certificate or hospital record before relying on the score.
Does this check for Manglik dosha too?
Yes. We compute Mars's house position for both partners and flag manglik status in the result. If both are manglik, classical texts treat it as a cancellation (the dosha cancels out). If only one is manglik, the result shows it so you can dig further. The standalone Manglik Calculator goes deeper into the severity grading.
Is this real Vedic astrology or a westernized version?
Real Vedic. We compute moon position with Swiss Ephemeris (the same astronomical engine professional astrologers use, derived from NASA JPL data) and apply Lahiri ayanamsha — the sidereal correction accepted by the Government of India and the Indian Ephemeris. Western tropical results will differ.
What does the calculator NOT cover?
Score-based matching is one signal. It doesn't account for: each partner's individual dasha period, the strength of the 7th-house lord in each chart, retrograde planets affecting marriage houses, Venus and Jupiter strength, or the practical-life context (income, family, life stage). Don't make a yes/no decision purely from the number. Do a real consultation — or at minimum, also check both individual charts for marriage-relevant placements.
